A prediction of preferred butterfish habitat based on a model co-developed with fisheries scientists, MARACOOS scientists, and the commercial fishing industry has gone live. The model identifies regions of preferred butterfish habitat given real-time environmental data; including satellite based frontal indices and surface current divergence. It represents what is happening on the shelf today. Over the next two weeks, a daily nowcast will be transmitted to a fishing vessel offshore. They will adaptively sample regions of predicted high and low butterfish habitat preference to evaluate the accuracy of the model. You can follow the evaluation here:
The model development represents a collaboration between the fishing industry, IOOS oceanographers, and NOAA fisheries scientists. It is supported by the Northeast Cooperative Research Program (NOAA/NMFS) and the U.S. IOOS program.
