MARACOOS welcomed 125 participants to its Annual Meeting, held from December 15-16 at the J.W Marriott Hotel in downtown Washington D.C. In addition to keynote addresses by the Honorable James L. Connaughton, Executive Vice President of Constellation Energy Group; Ms. Mary Glackin, Deputy Under Secretary of Commerce for Operations; Mr. Dana Goward, Director of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Marine Transportation System Management, and Dr. Louis Uccellini, Director of the National Weather Service’s National Centers for Environmental Prediction; participants engaged in a vigorous dialogue on critical themes, including: The Federal Context for Moving Forward; The Needs and Perspectives of the Community; Defending against Coastal Inundation; Supporting Maritime Safety and Resiliency; Enhancing Water Quality; Promoting Offshore Wind Energy Development; Supporting Ecological Decision Making; Technology today and into the future; and, Path to Prediction: Modeling, Data Management and Assimilation. MARACOOS’ Executive Director, Dr. Gerhard Kuska, commented, “This meeting was not only an opportunity to highlight the tangible benefits and value that MARACOOS provides to the user community, but it also laid the groundwork for enhanced partnerships and success in 2012 and beyond; it’s an exciting time to be engaged with MARACOOS!”
Follow-on activities include the establishment of thematic groups to engage users in focused topical areas under the umbrella of the MARACOOS User Council. The MARACOOS membership also selected 2 new members to its Board of Directors: Mr. Joseph Vietri, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and Captain Andrew McGovern, New Jersey Sandy Hook Pilots Association.
