Hear from Dr. Neil Hammerschlag, Executive Director of the Shark Research Foundation and lead of BioTrack a collaborative MBON project, and Dr. Brendan Shea, from Beneath The Waves Inc, as they explore how animal tracking data is being integrated into powerful data summary visualizations and infographics. These tools will be accessible to the public from the MBON website and supplied to management bodies to aid in assessments. The webinar will highlight the tagging of ocean sunfish (Mola mola) as part of the BioTrack project and how these data are helping reveal and map marine biodiversity hotspots.
BioTrack is a collaborative project to assess and monitor biodiversity hotspots where marine species share habitat. By integrating satellite and acoustic tracking of marine animals with remotely sensed environmental data, and modeling techniques, BioTrack aims to map these biodiversity hotspots and their intersections with areas of human use and interest, such as marine sanctuaries and wind energy leasing blocks. Additionally, the project will examine the impact of future environmental variation on these hotspots and its spatial intersections of human use. Emphasizing stakeholder engagement from the start, the project is designed to produce practical, accessible data products to aid in informed decision-making and support conservation and management efforts.
