MARACOOS in Pennsylvania

MARACOOS’ work benefits multiple constituencies in Pennsylvania, especially communities along the Delaware and Susquehanna Rivers that are prone to flooding. Our current efforts to expand water level sensors along the coast, in the Delaware Bay, in the Inland Bays, and in the Chesapeake Bay will improve flood forecasting inland. We deploy hurricane gliders, including ones deployed during Hurricane Sandy and Hurricane Irene, that help improve future hurricane forecasting. We collect data that improve health and safety and fortify the economy in Pennsylvania by leveraging our national network and local expertise. MARACOOS’ work also supports several industries, including maritime shipping and commerce, the energy industry, fisheries, and recreation.

Chesapeake Bay Environmental Forecasting

Through the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Forecast System (CBEFS), MARACOOS delivers forecasts of currents, hypoxia, harmful algal blooms, and sea nettles—critical for watermen, tourists, and emergency response.

Delaware Bay

Ocean observing in the Delaware Bay plays an essential role in supporting regional economic activity. Data collected by MARACOOS partners are accessible in raw form and in decision-support tools to a wide range of commercial, regulatory, educational, and recreational users. MARACOOS is proud to coordinate and develop robust coastal observing systems and data products that support the economic and safety needs of the residents of the Delaware Bay.
