MARACOOS in Rhode Island

Ocean observing in Rhode Island Bays plays an essential role in supporting regional economic activity. MARACOOS shares this part of the region with NERACOOS (Northeastern Regional Association Coastal Ocean Observing System). MARACOOS supports the development of robust coastal observing systems and data products that boost economic growth and enhance recreational and tourism opportunities in the Rhode Island Bays region.

Strengthening Maritime Safety

In collaboration with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), University of Rhode Island (URI), and Rutgers University, MARACOOS has three HF Radar stations along the Rhode Island coast in addition to one located on Block Island. These stations provide near-real-time surface current data, enhancing maritime safety, optimizing commercial navigation, and supporting search and rescue operations by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Expanding Coastal Monitoring

There are currently two webcameras in Rhode Island that are part of the national network, WebCOOS. The images collected from these webcameras enhance situational awareness and support alerts for coastal hazards, contributing to public safety and better-informed decision-making.
